In our boarding community the weekends replicate a “home from home” experience, fostering a sense of belonging and integration. The residential life is characterised by a relatively small, close-knit community at weekends which aims to provide the rest and relaxation that other pupils experience by going home, and where pupils can form bonds that go beyond routine school relationships. This atmosphere provides a supportive and familial environment for pupils, promoting their overall well-being. A “Weekend Committee” representing pupils from all year groups and Houses help to decide on the programme.
The basis of our approach and provision could be best summed up under these headings:
-
- Replicating a ‘home’ weekend experience.
- Diverse community-wide Saturday night activities.
- Opportunities to join trips and ‘catch up’ with friends.
- Accessing support from House staff and use College facilities.
The quieter weekends in the boarding setting are an opportunity for pupils to maintain a healthy lifestyle and engage in physical activities. Access to the gym, pool, golf course and other sports facilities ensures that pupils can pursue their fitness goals or simply unwind with recreational activities. This emphasis on physical well-being contributes to a holistic approach to education, promoting both academic and personal development.
On Saturday nights, each House hosts a variety of engaging activities on rotation, creating a vibrant and entertaining evening for pupils. The activities include classics such as bingo and film nights, as well as culturally enriching events like celebrating Chinese New Year. Reading Hockey Club visits are on offer for those that require their ‘live Sport fix’, or a quieter cinema trip might be more attractive to some. For those with a penchant for music, the odd ‘open-mic night’ can provide an entertaining experience, and every Saturday evening the Sixth Form social club is available for the older pupils. This diverse range of activities ensures that every pupil can find something enjoyable, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared experiences with pupils from all Houses and ages. Equally, if they fancy a quiet, restful evening with friends in House they can opt for this.
Weekends are also an opportunity for pupils to explore beyond Bradfield. There is one trip to London each term, providing a cultural experience, or a chance to meet up with family and friends. Seasonal excursions such as visits to the Winchester Christmas markets add a festive touch to weekends, whilst paint balling or go-karting may be attractive to the more active. These outings not only broaden pupils’ horizons but also create lasting memories that contribute to their personal growth.
Aside from the social and recreational aspects, weekends in the boarding environment also offer practical amenities. Brunch on a Sunday (coming after a well-deserved and much-needed lie in) is where the College community gathers and pupils then have the chance to top up on snacks and treats at shops and restaurants locally or in Reading. Additionally, a quiet work environment is maintained, allowing pupils to focus on their studies. Two House duty staff (HsM or Deputy HsM, Matron or Tutor) are on duty throughout the weekend to provide support and guidance, ensuring that pupils feel secure and happy.
