We are delighted to report that several Bradfield College alumni have had a great summer of cricket so far.

 

LAUREN BELL (J 17-19) IN ENGLAND WOMEN’S T20

Lauren Bell was part of the triumphant England Women’s Cricket T20 squad throughout July versus New Zealand, where England Women won the series 5-0 with a clean sweep.

In the first match of the series, Lauren took a five wickets and was named Player of the Match. During the second T20, Lauren took a key wicket as part of the squad that went 2-0 up against the Kiwis. In the fifth and final match Lauren took an incredible three wickets in just four overs at the home of cricket, Lord’s.

GUS ATKINSON (A 11-16) IN OUTSTANDING TEST CRICKET DEBUT

Gus Atkinson had an incredible test debut versus the West Indies in the first test match at Lord’s on Wednesday 10 July, finishing his first day of test cricket with bowling figures of seven wickets for 45 runs. In one of the most historic bowling performances on debut, Gus not only took two wickets in his first three overs, but during the afternoon session took three wickets in four balls in an astonishing over.

Further success came for Gus at Trent Bridge in Nottingham during the second test where he took four wickets, two in each innings as the England team again took victory over the West Indies. In the third and final test at Edgbaston, Gus took six wickets overall. England Men dominated the test series, winning 3-0.

We are thrilled to report that Gus was named Player of the Series across the three tests, taking 22 wickets overall in an unforgettable debut into test cricket.

HARRY CAME (D 12-16) MAIDEN CENTURY

Harry Came scored his first List A century against Middlesex for Derbyshire on Sunday 28 July. Batting patiently, Harry ended the innings on 110 from 130 balls to score a maiden century in a thrilling match.

Derbyshire controlled the match, winning by nine wickets with seven overs still to play. This moves Harry’s county team to the top of the Group A table in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

SOUTHERN VIPERS SUCCESS – AVA LEE (M 19-21) AND POPPY (M 19-24)

Two recent OBs have been also competing for the Southern Vipers this summer in both batting and bowling in the 2024 Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, a 50-over domestic competition.

Ava Lee (M 19-21), bowling for Southern Vipers took two wickets against The Blaze from the East Midlands and a further two wickets against the South East Starts, where the Southern Vipers heavily dictated the play, winning by seven wickets overall.

In a regional academy friendly, both Ava and Poppy (M) were selected to play against the Lancashire-based Thunder Academy. Ava claimed a sensational nine wickets on the first day of the three-day friendly. Poppy (M) contributed 14 runs where the Southern Vipers dominated their opposition, winning by an innings and 115 runs.

 

BRADFIELD WAIFS IN TWO FINALS

The Bradfield Waifs are also having a successful summer, winning the inaugural Cricketer Cup to be held for Over 50s. Their opponents the Oundle Rovers were first to bat in the final and posted a score of 187-5. The Bradfield Waifs responded and in a wonderful match won by five wickets, where former Hampshire batsman Will Kendall (A 87-92) ended on 67 not out.

The Waifs have also made the final of The Nicholson Cricketer Cup, beating the Charterhouse Friars in the semi-final. Captained by Sheridon Gumbs (D 17-22) and also led by Tom Ettridge (H 14-19), from the outset the Waifs bowled wonderfully. Charlie Gwynn (F 12-17) and Olly Birts (D 10-15) starred with the ball bowling 20 overs between them and taking 5-53. Michael Payne (G 07-09) took wickets at the end and bowled brilliantly to close out the innings. Other support from Monty McKenzie (F 17-22) and Hugo Darby (C 07-12) throughout the middle overs restricted Charterhouse to 168.

The Waifs replied with a 100+ opening partnership between Joe Sheldon (A 20-22) and Hugo Darby (C 07-12) before Darby fell leaving the Waifs in a brilliant position. Crofton Keyes (C 18-23) played beautiful to ensure the win was never in doubt and the Waifs flew home winning by six wickets.

The Waifs will face the Old Tonbridgians at Arundel Castle on Sunday 11 August. We wish them all the best for their final, their second in three years.
