The Shell delved into the world of marketing and advertising this week as they were tasked with creating a marketing campaign to present to a panel of expert judges.
On Tuesday, they received an excellent briefing from Strategy and Marketing Director Baba Awopetu from eye care specialist, Optegra, who gave an excellent overview of marketing basics before explaining how his company tailor their messages to their target audiences through a variety of media.
On Wednesday, the pupils had the opportunity to apply what they learned as they were divided into groups and were asked to select an item from a series of props to build an advertising campaign around.
They spent the morning session putting together their campaigns, with many spreading far and wide across campus to film short marketing videos for their items. After lunch, the pupils reconvened and presented their campaigns to the panel of expert parent judges.
The top five campaigns were selected to be presented in front of their peers. There were some imaginative ideas, from an environmentally friendly plant pot, to an innovative tea brand and an all-in-one camping tool. The judges were very impressed by the presentation skills on show as well as the imagination and creativity behind some of the products.
Head of the Horizons Careers Department, Sarah Leijten said: “They are having to collaborate, learn what it is like to work on a project as part of a team, and deliver a product to a deadline. This is the first time we have seen them since they did their mini-presentations in Year 9, so it has been really interesting to see how they have developed since then.”
