Thank you to Matt Shea from VICE for his insightful and inspiring talk about original reporting and documentary channels given to our Sixth Form film pupils on Thursday (30 November).
Matt is responsible for generating series and story ideas for broadcast TV, feature length release and branded content, covering international news, culture, music and human-interest stories on VICE’s increasingly large array of digital channels. He has developed and produced several series for broadcast TV in both the US and the UK and has produced two feature length documentaries as well as numerous online films, garnering over one million views
Matt’s lecture is just one of an amazing series of Minerva Programme lectures put on for our pupils this term that have shed light on an array of different topics and career options.
Here’s what some of our pupils had to say about Thursday’s talk:
Honestly, the most interesting lecture I have had at Bradfield. Matt Shea gave us an insight into the world behind documentary filmmaking and especially the danger involved in capturing some of the stories. I found it so refreshing to have a young presenter that talks on topics particularly relevant to today’s youth. |

Really enlightening lecture. A real privilege to ask questions to such a well-known documentary filmmaker who works for one of our generations largest media outlets, VICE. He gave really helpful advice regarding starting out as a documentary filmmaker. |

Thoroughly enjoyed the talk, very interesting choice of documentaries to show all the different but eye-opening styles of non-fiction filmmaking. The behind the scenes knowledge he revealed in the Q & A was very relevant to film studies pupils. Informative yet engaging and welcoming. |

I really enjoyed the talk as I feel as though it may have potentially opened up a new career path. To see different areas and concepts of the world helps you become much more open-minded and inspired as a film student. |
