To celebrate World Bee Day, a gazebo was put up in our Thai Garden on Monday 20 May to educate our staff and pupils about the honey bees that we keep onsite, as well as all types of wild bees. Here at the College, we have dedicated a flowerbed in our Thai Garden to a selection of pollen rich plants.

World Bee Day 2024 is a reminder that nearly 75% of our food crops rely to some extent on pollination, primarily by bees. A world without them could mean a world without fruits, nuts, and many vegetable varieties.

During the day, an observation hive was set up so that pupils and staff could see the inside of a hive with the bees working inside it along with the queen.  The bees were fully contained and could not escape – they were then returned to their hive later that day.

Also on display was some of the equipment that our onsite beekeepers use, as well as information about all types of bees. Additionally, bee survival kits were provided for pupils and staff to take away. These are small emergency kits that have sugar syrup in them to revive a bee if needed.

Our grounds team also created a Bee Café for each boarding house in the College, made of nectar and pollen rich plants with open flowers, as well as a water source with pebbles to give any bee safe access.
